Road wins are nice, no matter where that road takes you
By
Chris Stewart
"Welcome to Macon, Georgia."
"That's a sentence I've never uttered before."
At least not until I opened the Crimson Tide Sports Network broadcast of Alabama basketball at Mercer Tuesday night. The Tide went into a tough place - the beautiful little 3,200 seat Univeristy Center on the Mercer campus - and walked away with a 90-83 victory.
It was a really good win for Alabama. Mark Gottfried took a young team on the road and beat a squad that was three days removed from a 16-point win at #18 USC. Richard Hendrix was a monster inside again with 28 points and 14 boards.
It was also nice to see Alonzo Gee step up and hit some big shots in the 2nd half, en route to a 16-point night. He and Justin Tubbs hit big shots every time the Bears tried to make a serious run at the Tide.
Senario Hillman played well in front of a lot of family and friends. A true freshman from nearby Irwinton, Georgia, Hillman scored nine points, dished out 5 assists, and did not turn the ball over a single time while playing 29 minutes in only his second collegiate game.
This team still has plenty of work to do. But they got better and learned how to win a road game in front of a hostile crowd.
That's a good lesson, and a good start.
